Thomas Rath: "I see myself as a good friend who can be trusted"
Designer Thomas Rath has been successful for years - and he knows why: the former judge of "Germany's Next Topmodel" knows what his customers want.
Lavish parties, creative chaos and as little structure as possible: this is probably how many laypeople imagine the glamorous life of a fashion designer. But it's not like that. If you want to be successful as a fashion designer, you have to be disciplined above all else. A structured daily routine is of great importance. Designer Thomas Rath (50), who will soon be presenting a new collection from his THOM by Thomas Rath line for the TV channel QVC, knows this too. "For us, a morning starts with a delicious breakfast," he reveals with a wink.
Husband Sandro is always by his side
He knows that a healthy appetite is rather unusual in the fashion industry. "But I think it's very important, because you have to start the day feeling invigorated," says Rath. Thomas Rath is supported and accompanied in all situations by his husband Sandro. "We've built everything up together. That's the great thing, because you need a strong partner by your side," says the 50-year-old. Sandro mainly takes care of the administrative tasks in the company. "We have become a family with our entire team."
Design and sales: "Somehow that's where my talent lies"
Nevertheless, everyone has time for themselves - the fashion designer is certain that this is necessary in order to fully develop their own personality. And that has always been important to Rath. After leaving school, he only wanted one thing: to work in the fashion industry. He learned his job from the ground up. "Somehow that's where my talent lies - dealing with fabrics, seeing proportions, being able to make women more beautiful. People saw that in me very early on and I was encouraged," says Rath, looking back on his beginnings as a fashion designer. "My father knew that I could also sell well. He said: 'You're the best salesman'."
At the age of 40 and after working for a number of well-known fashion brands, he finally decided to combine his two talents and set up his own business. "My company is now eleven years old and here I am with not just one collection, but several. One is 'THOM by Thomas Rath', which is sold exclusively on QVC, the Thomas Rath semi-couture collection and the Thomas Rath trousers."

QVC has appreciated the ambition and discipline of the Düsseldorf-based fashion designer for years. "Thomas is full of passion, he is very ambitious and very, very reliable, which is very important for us as a partner. And totally authentic: anyone who experiences him in front of and behind the camera experiences the same Thomas Rath," says Ronald Käding, Head of Purchasing at QVC, praising the collaboration. The duo of fashion designer and shopping channel has been successful for three years. According to Rath, an impressive 1.3 million items from the THOM by Thomas Rath brand have been sold during this time.
Thomas Rath knows the trends
As an expert, Rath naturally always knows exactly what is particularly on trend with his customers. "Carmen blouses are very important in summer," explains the designer. "They are extremely feminine and a woman feels extremely confident in them. The arms are covered a little and you can show off your beautiful shoulders." Tunics are also very popular at the moment - because of their versatility. "You can wear them as a little dress or as a long blouse. That's the summer trend for me. And color: jeans blue tones are important, combined with rosé or coral. It can also be yellow sometimes."
